Dear friends, supporters, readers, and haters of the UNR Students for Liberty,

As children, we learn certain acceptable behaviors and concepts which are necessary to deal with other people. We learn things like: “don’t hit”, “don’t steal”, and “don’t lie”. Simple enough, but something happens as we begin to enter the adult world. We begin to realize that such concepts don’t actually seem to apply to the people who told us these things in the first place. We figure out that even though they told us not to hit, or steal, or lie, they themselves find it okay to do it – typically by asking someone else to do it on their behalf.

For the past four years, this club has fought to bring back the principles we learned as children. To show people that, just because something has been happening for a long time, doesn’t mean it is necessarily good. But just like little kids who would kick and scream when being told something they feel is wrong, my experience in this group has showed me that when presenting this idea to adults, they too are quick to begin internally kicking and screaming within their own inconsistency.

It has been such a joy identifying the absurdity of their worldview and presenting them with an alternative they have already learned as children. It is heartening to see that there are a lot of people our age who get it. Who understand that violence, theft, and coercion are almost never better than voluntary cooperation, persuasion, and peace. And although this club is now winding down due to the graduation of the leadership, I know that the message is something that can only continue to gain momentum.

Hurting, stealing, and lying to innocent people is wrong no matter who you are. And spreading a message like that is something we can all be proud of.

Our Final Meeting

For all those interested, our final campus discussion ever will take place this Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7 PM in the Grand Ballroom of the the Student Union. After this meeting we are dismantling the club for good.

In the coming weeks we will explain our rationale more fully and give some final thoughts on the whole experiment that has been UNR Students for Liberty. We (much to the chagrin of Mr. Given) will also be closing up shop on this blog. However, we will continue to host the content and redesign this as an archive of our past work, hopefully inspiring others in their own pursuits.

And before we begin this deconstructing process, we just want to thank everyone who has been a frequent subscriber of this site and all those who have help make our organization what it was.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Milt Glick, president of the University of Nevada, Reno, died Saturday night. His passing marks an incredible loss for so many, beginning with his wife Peggy, their sons and their families.

It is, of course, a loss for our University campus community, the faculty, staff, students, alumni and many, many friends across the state and nation. He was a strong, extraordinarily respected leader and that, combined with his enduring belief in the power of higher education, set the stage for a remarkable legacy.

In the coming days and even hours, plans for paying tribute to this great man will come together. We will keep you apprised.

Atlas Shrugged Pt. 1: UNR SFL’s Going to See it

A few people have wondered whether the UNR SFL were going to see Atlas Shrugged in theaters. The answer is yes and the date is set for tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 am (because we’re [sorry film makers] cheap libertarians trying to get the most bang for our buck).

We over here at the UNR Students for Liberty take pride in our ability to utilize technology on a budget to make our libertarian message more accessible. That it is why it is with great pleasure that I can announce the launch of the mobile version of our website.

I assume that many of you have smartphones available to you, so please feel free to visit and explore. Those of you who have visited our site from a mobile platform before will notice that the site now loads about ~70% faster and is much more readily navigable. We think we have optimized the experience fairly well (though we are always looking for suggestions for improvements to be made) and thus think this will accelerate the pace at which our discussions can be had.

We hope this whets your appetite for more and prompts you to more easily enter into dialog with us and the ideas we put forth.

This Thursday will likely prove to be another rousing debate amongst ‘promoters’ and leave-aloners of free market capitalism. Arguably one of the most contentious issues throughout all of libertarian philosophy, namely intellectual property rights, will be discussed at length with a focus on the central issue: is there a net benefit or loss associated with the granting of intellectual property rights.

The Students for Liberty has named our original Abolish ASUN Festival its Event of the Year at its recent International Conference. This is an amazing honor and we will be sure to bring you more news, stories, and videos about how the whole conference went down in the coming week, but suffice it to say for now: we’re awesome, they’re awesome, liberty’s great, and the world’s getting better.

We want to thank everyone who helped make it happen (you know who you are [ahem, Abby]) as well as all of those who voted for us to win. It is important to note, however, that there were many great groups and events this year that helped spread The Good Word to more people than ever before, and they all deserve a great deal of admiration.

So again, thank you Big Papa Students for Liberty, all the groups in attendance, and especially all the governmental institutions that make it childishly easy to ruthlessly tear apart with sound arguments, logical conclusions, and mountains upon mountains of their own ineptitude.
