2010 Tripartisan Debates – Minimum Wage
By: John Russell

The UNR Students for Liberty participated in a debate with the UNR Young Dems and the UNR College Republicans. Throughout the course of the upcoming weeks, I will be cropping certain debate topics that were touched upon in either the shotgun short answer rounds or the longer more involved rounds and post them.

It should be noted that the skit we performed illustrating a method which betters the human condition was not recorded due to a camera malfunction. If anyone out there filmed this, we would love to place this in our archives and I would sincerely ask you to drop me an email: johnrussell [at] unrforliberty.com. Without further adieu, I present one of the shotgun topics: Minimum Wage. Enjoy.

Damn Democrats, don't know how to argue the point. Barry destroys them and they miss the point completely. You guys rock.

But I paper, and while I'm unsure where I actually stand on this issue, an argument can be made for minimum wage.

Sure if you labor isn't worth five bucks an hour, you are out of work, but if there is sufficient competition, even if your labor is worth twenty bucks an hour, undercutting will cause you to be paid less than five bucks an hour. Because of this, minimum wage serves as a lower bound, so that competition between workers doesn't force everyone to live at subsistence level. As the great Thornley himself might say, it stops exploitation.
