Sign the Petition – Abolish ASUN
By: John Russell

It is time to stop playing eye for an eye with the already blind. The ASUN wastes over $600 of your money during your college career. It is time for us to come together as a unified student body to say “enough” and take back our college experience. Let us say that it was this petition and your signature that we finally eliminated the waste of the ASUN. Let us say that on this day we changed ourselves and our university for the better.

Watch the video, sign the petition, and abolish the ASUN.

Isn't this Ironic. You're trying to shut down the association that gave your organization the opportunities to become what it is today. Why not get the funding for this ridiculous event through sponsorship and actually make a point by saying that clubs can get funding elsewhere by being more proactive. This event is hippocritical and pointless.

    Hippocritical?

  • Charlee

I agree with Eric. What you're trying to do is pretty much impossible. Plus, why try to ruin something that's beneficial for all students and the community?

You two clearly have no idea what we've done in the past. We've tried your boring ways, we've tried to reform the institution, we've tried everything short of this.

There is nothing to be done.

We need to abolish the ASUN.

I don't even go to UNR, although my girlfriend did and she said the ever increasing ASUN fees were a waste of her hard earned money.

Plus the point is not to try and get anyone else to pay for it. The point is to get the ASUN to pay for it to PROVE how their system is flawed.

C'mon, I go to Community College and I knew that. I also don't see how this event has any relation to a water dwelling, herbavorious mammal found in sub-Saharan Africa. 'Hippocritical'

    It's 'Hypocritical'.

I thought the smart people went to UNR…

I agree that there is a discussion that needs to be had about increasing ASUN fees, but the discussion we're having is whether the ASUN should be abolished or not. The ASUN does nothing but try to benefit and provide for the student body. It's the point of their existence. We're not dealing with any sort of corruption or atrocity that is unsolvable with reasonable deliberation. All that aside, I take back what i said about this event being pointless. It will provide some sort of entertainment (although trivial), and the organization will gain beneficial experience in their field of study. Thus utilizing the association that this organization is so obviously and adamantly against. I'm sorry but isn't that hypocrisy*? Hopefully i didn't spell anything wrong and redirect the entire discussion.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as Barry and John and the rest of SFL, but if the best defense that can be mounted is, “why try to ruin something that's beneficial for all students and the community?”

Charlee, not very many students “benefit” from ASUN. ASUN members leaders rubber stamp fee increases for parking and food, had to be handed the opportunity and allowed all the work to be done for them essentially in getting rid of “free speech zones”, have failed to be a substantive voice against cuts to higher education (with notable but few exceptions) and generally spend more time worrying about whether it appears the government is doing something for students than actually doing it.

Perhaps things have changed over the past year but I watched the system for five years pretty closely and participated for over half of that time. ASUN does not deserve $1.6 million. Perhaps some fraction of that, but not $1,600,000.

The dismissal of concerns over waste within the government by government leaders is expected but still disgusting.
