Activities for Spring 2010
By: Barry Belmont

The UNR Students for Liberty are proud to present our planned activity list for the Spring Semester of 2010. Although this list provides a fairly accurate representation of our events, there are always activities which we plan and participate in at the last minute as unique situations present themselves. We encourage all those interested to continue following this site, our calendar, and our facebook page.

Also, we will be publishing our new newsletter, Liberty, monthly as well as begin video (and audio) podcasting the conclusions reached at our bi-weekly meetings.

Spring Semester 2010

Event: ASUN Funding 101 – Learn how to properly and effectively get more money than you or anybody else deserves from your student government. Sure, the money is ultimately coming from unwitting students who don’t want to support your dumb programs, but that’s the system’s problem, not yours. So come and learn how to request more money that you could possibly know what to do with.
Where: TBA
When: 6PM – 8PM (subject to change) on Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Meeting: Libertarian Crash Course – Join the UNR Students for Liberty’s first meeting of the year where we will be discussing the basic principles of libertarinism, free markets, and what the club is all about.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, January 28, 2010

Meeting: Victimless Crimes – Is it the State’s business prosecuting “victimless” crimes? That is, should one be punished for simply smoking pot or not wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle (darn criminal hippies!)? We will be discussing the merits of both positions — for and against — while discussing the overarching issue of whether or not people could choose to not follow libertarian precepts.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, February 11, 2010

Meeting: Intellectual Property Rights – Here we go again. We are revisiting one of our most divisive meetings to date and determining, once and for all, whether copyrights and patents are justifiable/necessary within a libertarian society. How is a modern society to deal with the exclusivity of information? We hope to find out.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, February 25, 2010

Co-event: Tri-Partisan Debate – That’s right, you read that correctly. We are going to be hosting the infamous tri-partisan debate again! Democrats vs Republicans vs Libertarians. Come watch us all duke it out and promote our political philosophies.
Where: TBA
When: First week of March (subject to change)

Co-event: Abolish the ASUN Festival  – We’re hoping to be funding for this event by the ASUN itself. We will be spending money as “frivolously” as possible to give the students of the University a look into how easy it is to waste money with a fiscally irresponsible student government. This will be a legitimate event with ponies, a bounce house, a magician or two, maybe some clowns, pizzas,  music, fun. This places the ASUN in an odd position: if they do fund this event they will be proving our point, if they do not they will be discriminating against us with no laws or rules to point to for justification. This should be fun.
Where: JCSU Lawn
When: First week of March (subject to change)

Meeting: Diversity – Are diversity initiatives helping or hurting? Or rather, who benefits from these programs? Are those who espouse and support “diversity” simply elitist or are they attempting a delicate balancing act between racism and tolerance?
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, March 11, 2010

Lecture: Austrian Economics – Barry Belmont is taking a break from usual anarcho-capitalist ramblings and focusing on something with a little more merit. He will present his case for the validity of the Austrian School of Economics. Though many are likely to agree with the foundations of Austrian Economics, Mr. Belmont will seek to cut the very legs out from underneath the subject and reestablish on a firmer grounding. Once again he will bring to the table his evolutionary biological background to explain how and why economics (specifically, Austrian Economics) works the way it does.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, March 25, 2010

Meeting: Liberty and Religion – We live in a country where the separation of church and state is held as one of the most undeniable tenets. But why should this be the case? Does religious tolerance require a secular state? Would a libertarian society necessarily have to have a separation of church and state? Or more broadly, how does religion affect liberty and how does liberty affect religion?
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, April 8, 2010

Meeting: Liberty and Science – We are bridging the gap in the whole Religion and Science debate by inserting our cherished notion of Liberty. How does the scientific enterprise affect the liberty of the individual? How does the changing scientific notions of human nature affect our political philosophies? Where would science be without the State?
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, April 22, 2010

Meeting : Sedition - Our most feared meeting to date. When is it justified to go to war with the government?
We’ve saved the hardest debate for last, so don’t miss this one!
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, April 29, 2010
