Activites for Fall 2009
By: John Russell

The UNR Students for Liberty are proud to present our planned activity list for the Fall Semester of 2009. Although this list provides a fairly accurate representation of our events, there are always activities which we plan and participate in at the last minute as unique situations present themselves. We encourage all those interested to continue following this site, our calendar, and our facebook page.

Fall Semester 2009

Movie/Event: How to Survive a Police Encounter – Learn how to properly and effectively flex your Consitutional rights during a police encounter. Don’t get busted. Former D.A. and current public defender Linda Nordvig will facilitate a short lecture and answer questions following a 45 minute film. This event will make you a more informed citizen. It is possibly be the most valuable information you have ever had.
Where: JCSU Theatre
When: 6PM – 8PM on Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Meeting: Libertarianism 101 – Join the UNR Students for Liberty’s first meeting of the school year where we will be discussing the basic principles of libertarinism, free markets, and what the club is all about. We will be using a few clips from South Park to illustrate the principles we (and you!) espouse.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, September 3, 2009

Event: A Day at the Range – During one of these weekend, the UNR Students for Liberty will be hosting a shooting range event where we can all get to know one another and learn the invaluable skill of shooting when Z-Day comes.
Where: A super duper safe gun range, so stop worrying asun
When: TBA – A weekend

Meeting: Jack Bauer – We will be dedicating an entire meeting about Jack Bauer (from Fox’s 24) to discuss wheter or not he is a “patriot” or a “terrorist”. We will discuss if and when it’s okay to break the law (like torturing) and for what reasons. To what extent are we allowed to disregard law and order if it gets in the way (such as Bauer).
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, September 17, 2009.

Event: The Promotional No-Cash Barter Table Event for Charity and Bake Sale for Puppies (Proceeds Donated) – We want to show the effects of a barter system, a market, charitable acts, have a bake sale, and support puppies all at the same time. So…this is what we came up with. Check back as the date approaches!
Where: TBA, although it will probably be on Hilliard Plaza
When: TBA, but probably the week of September 21 to September 25

Co-event: Civil War Reenactment – That’s right, you read that correctly. We are going to be assisting a civil war reenactment group put together a DVD to recreate a historic battle fought at Fort Churchill. Join us damnit, it will be fun I promise.
Where: Fort Churchill
When: All-day on Saturday, September 26, 2009

Print: Liberty Report Printed – Be sure to pick up a copy around campus!
Where: JCSU, Business Building, Education Building
When: First week of October

Meeting: Capital Punishment – Is it ever okay to kill a human being? Is it alright to kill when someone is not a direct threat to you? Should taxes be used to put people to death, even though many of those taxed are morally opposed to such actions? Is the state sanctioned extermination of others ever morally permissible? These and many other questions will be addressed during this meeting. In fact, this will likely prove to be one of the few meetings in which many of us will disagree vehemently about the subject and the answers, but let us all come together with an open mind and discuss these issues level-headedly.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, October 1, 2009

Speaker: TBA - We will be bringing another speaker to campus this year to lecture on yet another interesting topic. More details will be given as the date approaches.
Where: TBA
When: Time to be determined on Thursday, October 10, 2009

Meeting: Worst Presidents – Sure, in the long history of the USA there have been presidents we may look up to and who inspire our respect. But who gives a crap about them? At this meeting we’re going to talk about how Lincoln was a fascist and how Dubya broke the system. So come with some of your favorite “worst presidents” and have a good time.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, October 15, 2009

Movie/Event: ZOMBIE MOVIE MARATHON – In lieu of our ongoing preparations for Z-Day, we will be hosting a 24 hour movie marathon full of zombie movies. What could be better than that?
Where: JCSU Theatre or Library Theater. Stay tuned.
When: All day/night Friday, October 23, 2009

Meeting: Zombies and Liberty - Do the (un)dead have rights? How about the brain dead? Who gets rights and whose rights should we defend? The problem of zombies–that is, people who lack a semblance of ‘peopleness’ about them–pose a very difficult problem in establishing the basis of liberty. We will explore this issue as well as recap what we learned from our Zombie Movie Marathon.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, October 29, 2009

Print: Liberty Report Printed – Be sure to pick up a copy around campus!
Where: JCSU, Business Building, Education Building
When: First week of November

Movie: V for Vendetta - Really, we libertarians like V for Vendetta and want to show it on the fifth of November? Go figure…
Where: Library Theater.
When: 7PM on Thursday, November 5, 2009

Event: Tripartisan Debate – Democrats vs Republicans vs Us. Come learn what each of us has to say about a wide range of issues. We will be teaming up with the Young Democrats and the College Republicans for a debate wherein we each talk about our basic platforms and beliefs. It will be informative, heated, and fun. We will also try and get a panel to declare a winner (UNR debate team anyone?)
Where: TBA
When: Time to be determined on Thursday, November 12, 2009

Meeting: File Sharing – Are copyrights legitimate or just government protectionism? What about digital rights and file sharing? Is it theft? Join us as we discuss both sides of the argument and try and incorporate other angles as well. This will be yet another topic many within the group will probably not be able to come to a consesus on.
Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, November 19, 2009

Print: Liberty Report Printed – Be sure to pick up a copy around campus!
Where: JCSU, Business Building, Education Building
When: First week of December

Meeting : War - Is war ever justified?  Surely, we can agree that those who are responsible for death should be punished, but what about the innocent people of war?  Is the institutionalized slaughter of innocent people ever justified?  If it’s wrong to kill an innocent individual, is it less wrong to kill a group of innocent individuals?  If there is a hostage situation where one gunman is holding 5 people hostage, and you kill the 5 hostages, 3 bystanders, and the gunman himself trying to resolve the situation, are you not responsible for the deaths of the innocents?  Does this analogy even reflect the institution of war?
We’ve saved the hardest debate for last, so don’t miss this one!

Where: JCSU 423
When: 7PM – 8:30PM on Thursday, December 3, 2009

That is done during a scheduled fitting, so the doctor blind date uncensored can ensure that the artificial eye fits properly and that the patient is able to take the eye in and out without assistance. The eye must fit just right, or it may not stay in properly. It has to be able to be removed for cleaning and maintenance, but should otherwise be firmly seated, allowing the person to do normal daily activities without any fear of dislodging it.
