The United States Produces 4x More Oil Than Iraq, and 2x More Than Iran.
By: John Russell
Answer me:
1. If the current war is ‘for oil’, then wouldn’t it be smart to invade Saudi Arabia?
2. If the current need ‘for oil’ is so great, why didn’t we just invade Mexico?

    Respectfully following link from Digg.com,

When I use the expression 'for oil' I think of it as 'America's long term global energy manipulation'. I believe that the U.S. invaded Iraq in order to position ourselves as an authority in the region for a few reasons (both pertain to oil).

First of all, by installing a puppet government in Iraq (essentially making it the 51st state), we guarantee a monopoly between the U.S. and the Iraqi government when it comes to oil production – if we so desire it. So even though we may not require the oil at this time, we've pretty much guaranteed that future oil production can be steered towards the U.S. or at least artificially managed to manipulate global pricing and demand

Secondly, according to this source, an article from the Brookings Institution it has been hypothesized that Iraq may contain more oil that even the mighty Saudi Arabia.

“Center for Global Energy Studies and Petrolog & Associates offered an even more optimistic estimate of 300 bbl—a number that would give Iraq reserves greater even than those of Saudi Arabia”

If these predictions turn out to be true, and the world remains dependent on gasoline engines, the U.S. govt has made a very wise move indeed in securing Iraqi oil. Whether or not it was a moral decision is all together a different matter. I believe the invasion of Iraq is part of a long term plan to guarantee the U.S. plenty of oil in the upcoming century for itself and allies. Also, by positioning ourselves militarily in the Middle East, we'll attempt to intimidate neighboring countries into seeing things our way and continue to see that oil is traded in dollars instead of Euro's.

Well thats my attempt at an argument. I hope I've given a reasonable explanation of what people mean when they refer to the war as being 'for oil'. At least the above explanation is my current view the matter.

    Best regards,

    Barry Broome

I thought this article was interesting as well – Iraq has an oil revenue surplus due to U.S. taxes paying for reconstruction…

    Hi Barry,
I want to thank you for clearing up the use of the 'for oil' expression that many people tend to throw around. As we all know, President Bush has time and time again called for more oil production, but many people lend the question: To what cost? Would we go to war over it?

Thousands of words and days of debate could be (and have been) spent determining what the purpose of this war really was. And although finding answers to this is important, I believe an even more important issue that we all must consider is how do we end it. It is clearly bankrupting the nation (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/…), radicalizing new terrorists (http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0718/dailyUpdate….), and limiting liberty (http://www.dhs.gov/). Unfortunately, out of the 300,000 + million people that live in America, we are presented with only 2 presidential candidates that are clearly false alternatives.

What is a patriot to do?

Just as a side comment…I think it's really cool that somewhere in the vastness of the internets two Barry B's happened to stumble into each other on the fringes.

Really interesting articles you guys. (And great table John)
